Various tests to assess your pet’s health and diagnose illnesses.
What You Should Know About Pet Diagnostics
Diagnostic tests help your vet identify what's wrong and how to treat it—here's a look at the most common types and how coverage applies.
What Pet Diagnostics Actually Are
Pet diagnostics refer to any test or procedure used to evaluate your pet's health, identify the cause of symptoms, or monitor a known condition. Common examples include blood panels, urinalysis, X-rays, ultrasounds, and biopsies—each providing critical information your vet uses to guide treatment.
Blood Work and Lab Tests
Complete blood counts and chemistry panels are among the most common diagnostics vets order. They can reveal infections, organ dysfunction, anemia, diabetes, and other systemic conditions. These tests are often recommended as part of annual wellness exams or when symptoms suggest an underlying issue.
Imaging: X-Rays and Ultrasounds
Radiographs (X-rays) help vets assess bones, the chest, and abdomen for fractures, tumors, or fluid buildup. Ultrasounds provide real-time imaging of soft tissues and organs. Both are commonly used for injury evaluation, reproductive health, and investigating unexplained pain or changes in behavior.
When Are Diagnostics Covered?
Most accident and illness pet insurance plans cover diagnostics when they are medically necessary to investigate a covered condition. Routine or wellness-related diagnostic tests—such as annual bloodwork at a checkup—are typically only covered if your plan includes a wellness add-on.
Specialist and Advanced Diagnostics
Some conditions require advanced testing such as MRIs, CT scans, endoscopies, or referrals to a veterinary specialist. These procedures can be significantly more expensive, making comprehensive coverage particularly valuable for pets with complex or chronic health concerns.
Why Early Diagnostics Can Save Money
Catching a condition early through diagnostics often leads to simpler, less costly treatment. Delayed diagnosis, on the other hand, can allow conditions to progress into emergencies requiring hospitalization or surgery. Pet insurance that covers diagnostic testing can encourage earlier intervention and better long-term outcomes.
