Waiting Periods

The time you must wait after obtaining pet insurance before specific conditions are covered.

What You Should Know About Waiting Periods

A waiting period is the gap between when your policy starts and when specific coverage begins—here's how it works and why it matters.

Why Waiting Periods Exist

Waiting periods protect insurers from people enrolling only after a pet is already sick or injured. They ensure the policy is intended for future, unpredictable events rather than pre-planned claims—helping keep premiums fair for all policyholders.

Typical Waiting Period Lengths

Most plans apply a short waiting period of around 2 to 14 days for accidents, and a longer period of 14 to 30 days for illnesses. Orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia often carry extended waiting periods of up to 6 months, depending on the insurer.

What's Not Covered During the Waiting Period

Any condition that arises or shows symptoms during the waiting period is typically not eligible for reimbursement—even if you file the claim after the waiting period ends. The condition may also be flagged as pre-existing going forward.

Accidents vs. Illness Waiting Periods

Accident coverage often activates sooner than illness coverage because accidents are sudden and unforeseeable. Illness waiting periods are longer to prevent coverage of conditions that may have already been developing before enrollment.

Waiting Periods and Policy Renewals

When you renew an existing policy with the same provider, waiting periods typically do not reset. However, switching to a new insurer or changing your plan significantly may restart waiting periods—so reviewing terms before switching is important.

Enrolling Early Is a Smart Strategy

The earlier you enroll your pet, the sooner your waiting periods are behind you—and the less likely it is that conditions develop before coverage activates. Enrolling a young, healthy pet gives you the broadest possible coverage window from the start.
